About our project
‘Performing Space / Spatializing Performance: Space and Performance in 21st Century Cinema’ PID2024-155365NB-I00
This project is part of an ongoing research on transnational cinemas and paradigm changes in the cinema of the 21st century. Building on our previous work on cosmopolitanism, the transnational, borders and mobilities, we continue to argue that film space is not simply a background for action, but a central element that creates meaning.
In this new phase, we extend this understanding of cinematic space by bringing actors and characters back into the discussion of space. Rather than separating performance from setting, we consider actors’ bodies, faces, voices, gestures, and movements as part of the mise-en-scène and, therefore, as part of cinematic space itself. By examining performance and expanding the concept of film space in this way, the project provides new perspectives on the transnational and cosmopolitan imaginaries and their connection to real places and social realities.
